Environment - India - Almost impossible to relocate Kanpur tanneries
A representative of the regional authority in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh has told the national government that it would be next to impossible to relocate tanneries located in and around Kanpur owing to lack of space.
Vijay Bahadur Singh, advocate general of Uttar Pradesh, made the comments in front of the National Green Tribunal, a panel established in 2010 by the Indian government to deal with legal cases related to the environment.
The possibility of shifting these units to the Banthar leather park at Unnao is next to impossible as only 25% of them can be accommodated at this site,51 he said.
He added that that the process of relocating them would take at least four years, meaning the best option is to “improve the existing mechanism of tanneries”.
