Kenya invites bids for leather park

The Kenyan government has put out an international tender for the construction of a dedicated leather industrial park in the Machakos region of the country, local media reports. The proposed park will occupy 500 hectares of land, with space for 15 tanneries, waste treatment facilities and a minimum of 200 leather factories. It will be jointly run by the Kenya Leather Development Council and the Export Processing Zones Authority. Companies wishing to bid for the project will have to demonstrate their capacity to design, supply and construct the industrial park, as well as its accompanying effluent treatment facility. Leather companies who operate in the park will be given a 20% tax reduction of products sold to the Kenyan market, according to reports. This is to ensure that local consumers have access to high-leather products at accessible prices.
